I grew up in the northeastern part of the country where the majority of the weather is very cold. We never had air conditioning in my childhood home, and survived the brief, summer heat by running portable fans. The priority was always the heating system, and preparing for the upcoming winter was a lot of work and worry.
After graduating college, I was eager to move south and leave the cold and snow far behind. For the most part, I am very happy to live in a warmer climate. I now have central air conditioning in my home, and the system runs for about nine months out of the year. There are just a few weeks when the temperature drops and gets a little chilly at night.
I do not have a heating system installed in my home. I have a ductless heat pump in my bedroom that I absolutely love. In the summer months, I use the heat pump for a bit of extra cooling power. During those few weeks of chilly weather, I switch the unit to heating mode and keep my bedroom perfectly warm and cozy. The system operates from a remote control, which I keep within reach of my bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, feeling a little too hot or too cold, I don’t need to get out of bed to adjust the temperature.
The heat pump is wonderfully quiet and energy efficient, and it is helpful in filtering contaminants out of my indoor air. Although the purchase and installation price was fairly expensive, the heat pump has more than paid for itself.
